Noticing Your Money Thoughts (Thinking Exercise) Ep#35
Money Secrets Podcast – Episode 35
Introduction
We've made a lot of progress as a society in many areas, but one thing that hasn’t changed enough is our relationship with money. If we want to tip the scales in favour of marginalised people, we need to understand the secrets to making money in small business.
The more we talk about money — especially the secrets that usually stay behind closed doors or on the golf course — the more empowered we become. My mission is to get more money into the hands of good people, specifically business owners like you.
Because I believe small business can change the world. And to do that, we need to be making more money.
Acknowledgement of Country
This episode was recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. I’d like to acknowledge them as the Traditional Owners and custodians of this land and water that I live, work and play on.
I pay my respects to Elders past and present, and recognise that sovereignty has never been ceded. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land.
The Thoughts That Hold Us Back
"I charge less because I don’t want to scare people off."
"I don’t even know what I think about money most of the time."
"Money stuff makes me anxious, so I just avoid it."
If any of that feels familiar, you're not alone. In a recent Good Money Club session, we ran a powerful live exercise designed to slow down the noise in our brains and help us actually hear what’s going on underneath.
And it worked. So much so that I decided to share the exact experience with you in podcast form — because the truth is, your thoughts about money are running the show, even when you don’t realise it.
What Really Shapes Our Finances?
Most of us focus heavily on skill-building. Courses, certifications, programs, podcasts. You name it.
And don’t get me wrong — skills matter. I’m a Chartered Accountant, and that’s as “skilled” as you can get in the world of finance.
But when I started my business? I didn’t know how to make money. Because making money — especially in your own business — is as much about your thoughts as it is about your skills.
Why We Need to Hear Our Thoughts First
Before you can change your thoughts about money, you have to actually hear them. That’s where this exercise comes in.
In the session (and now in this episode), I guided members through real-life scenarios and asked:
What’s the first thought that comes up?
Seeing someone brag about a six-figure launch on Instagram
Getting declined at the checkout
Spotting a shiny new BMW at the lights
Walking through your dream home and hearing the price
Seeing a big overdue invoice
Receiving an enquiry from your dream client
Hearing “this is more than I expected”
Getting your biggest ever BAS
Setting the price for your newest offer
These scenarios aren’t just hypothetical. They’re daily life in business — and they reveal the subconscious scripts shaping your decisions, pricing, confidence, and client interactions.
Money Mindset Is a Skill Too
What I want you to know is this:
Managing your thoughts about money is a learnable skill.
And the reason this work matters so much is because your unspoken beliefs will leak out — into your pricing, your sales calls, your marketing copy, and even your client boundaries.
We often say things like:
“Maybe if I keep my prices a bit lower, they’ll say yes.”
“I shouldn’t follow up on that invoice — I don’t want to seem pushy.”
“I’m not good with money, I just focus on doing good work.”
But all of that adds up. And it usually adds up to less revenue and more resentment.
Thoughts Aren’t Facts
One of the most helpful things to remember from this episode is this:
A thought is just a thought. It’s not a fact.
You don’t need to judge it. You just need to hear it — and then choose if you want to replace it with something that actually serves you.
Like:
“I charge the amount that creates the best results.”
“I could charge less, but then we’d both be disappointed.”
“This price is based on real value and real results.”
When you start standing in that energy, you shift from desperate to discerning. From fear to clarity.

A Different Kind of Episode
This isn’t your typical podcast episode. You’re not just listening — you’re participating. So grab a notebook and write down your own answers as you go.
Because once you see those thoughts clearly, you can start rewriting them.
Final Thoughts
If your thoughts about money have been holding you back, you’re not broken. You’re human.
But with awareness, intention, and a little support, you can build new beliefs — ones that support your revenue, your boundaries, and your wellbeing.
This episode is your invitation to begin.
